Over the past two weeks, you have probably seen ConnPIRG students in the union, in your dorms, dining halls, and on your way to class asking for your signature on a petition to make Uconn zero waste. 40 or 50 of my friends and I have been busy collecting over 3,500 petition signatures from Uconn students for this important initiative!  We using the petitions to show widespread student support as we work with the university to adopt a zero waste policy.

While out petitioning, I got a lot of questions about whether zero waste was actually possible, so I wanted to take a second to explain what zero waste is and what it is not: A zero waste policy does not just mean increasing recycling, or policing personal behavior. Instead, zero waste is a complete shift in the way that we think about waste. A zero waste Uconn would have educational programs in the dorms and during orientation.  It would include composting in all dining halls, and would changes in purchasing policies so that waste is taken into account in every decision made on campus.

The policy is possible, and ought to be adopted. So thank you for signing the petition and following our progress!
