The Textbook Rebellion

By Mike Webb
State Board Treasurer

Earlier today on Husky Drive we bore witness to a battle of good vs. evil, David vs. Goliath, Superman vs. uhh Kryptonite? Whatever.

We were joined by two larger than life mascots, the "Textbooks Rebel" representing affordable open source textbooks vs. "Mr. 300" the tailored suit wearing, cigar smoking publishing industry fat cat. We were making a simple point: textbooks are needlessly too expensive.

While the publishing industry dominates the market for textbooks and sets prices as high as they please, a new player is emerging: open source textbooks. Open source textbooks are free online and available for between $20-$30 in print.

We collected around 200 petitions in support of open source textbooks and will work throughout the semester to encourage professors to adopt open books for their classroom. Peruse our website to find out more, or check out textbookrebellion.org to find out what you can do! Thanks for attending and cheering the Textbooks Rebel onto victory.
